How to start selling sweets from home: the step-by-step to take the first step

By Bakerly Team · Published on June 22, 2026

Almost every baker started the same way: making a cake for the family, hearing "you should sell this," and being unable to stop thinking about it. You already have the talent. What's usually missing is knowing where to start without getting tangled up in a thousand things at once.

The truth is you don't need a storefront, a business license right away, or expensive equipment to take the first step. You need a good product, the right price, and a way to never lose track of an order. Let's take the simplest path.

1. Choose a few products to start with

The mistake beginners make is wanting to do everything: cake, pie, sweets, honey bread, dessert in a cup. Start with two or three products you make really welland that you can repeat consistently. It's better to be known for your chocolate cake than to make ten things so-so.

2. Find the right price before you sell

This is the step most people skip, and the one that causes the most headaches later. If you start charging wrong, it's hard to raise the price once the customer is used to it. So get it right from the start.

A fair price covers four things: the ingredients, your work time, fixed costs (electricity, gas, packaging) and your profit. It's not just the cost of what goes into the sweet.

Start here

Use the free pricing calculator to find the price for your products before your first sale. Just fill it in and it shows you how much to charge. If you want to understand the math calmly, also read the complete pricing guide.

3. Take good photos of your sweets

You don't need a professional camera. Your phone will do. The secret is natural light: photograph near a window, during the day, with a clean background (a light-colored cloth, a wooden table). A good photo sells. It's what makes the customer stop scrolling and ask for the price.

4. Start promoting to people you already know

Don't wait until you have a thousand followers. Your first customers are the people who already know you: family, neighbors, the kids' school group, coworkers. Let them know you're selling, send photos, run a small launch promotion. Word of mouth from a happy customer is worth more than any ad early on.

  • Post on your WhatsApp status, it's free and everyone sees it.
  • Create an Instagram profile just for your sweets, with easy-to-find photos and prices.
  • Ask each happy customer to refer you to a friend.

5. Have a way to never lose an order

Here lies a silent danger. At first there are few orders and you think you can keep it all in your head. Then the first busy weekend arrives: three cakes, two batches of sweets, a customer who ordered lactose-free and you can't remember which one. A forgotten or mixed-up order ruins your reputation early on.

Write everything down from your very first order: what it is, when it's for, who it's from, how much they'll pay and what deposit was already paid. A notebook works at first, but it ages fast and gets lost among WhatsApp conversations.

Do you need to register a business to start?

To take your first steps and test the waters, no. But as you grow, registering as a small business is cheap and gets you an invoice, makes it easier to sell to companies, and organizes the formal side. It's a natural step once sales pick up, not a barrier to getting started.

How Bakerly helps

You save every order with a date, customer and amount, see everything on a calendar so nothing is forgotten, calculate the right price for your products, and keep track of how much came in and how much is still owed. When things get busy, AI can even reply to your customer on WhatsApp for you, sharing price and timing.
